Keep in mind what on these plots they depicted the gas density of a dark matter, not stellar component of a galaxies. Galaxies are small white dots at this scale.
Edit: this is a newer Universe simulation: http://www.illustris-project.org
Go to Explorer page and switch the main layer to “stellar composite”. You will be surprised how small actual galaxies are compared to those blue filaments shown as default layer.
